Calibrating your Beacons

NOTE This feature is only available for Beacon, Tough beacon and Card beacons with firmware version 4.0+, firmware 1.5+ for Beacon Pro.

It is now possible to calibrate your Kontakt.io beacons using the Web Panel or directly in the Kontakt.io administration apps. This is specially useful as the beacons tend to emit different RSSI signals in different environments, so calibrating your beacons to better reflect their behavior in the location they are going to be used in, will help increase the accuracy of those readings.

Web Panel

Select the device from the beacons list under Beacons, to get to the beacon detail view.

There, under general settings, you will find the available Tx Power with its calibrated value right below, as shown in the image.

Once you have identified the received RSSI value at 1 meter from your beacons in the venue you are going to be deploying them, you can change the calibrated value in the 1M RSSI field according to the Tx Power configured on your beacons. Once you are all set, save your changes.

Then proceed to apply the new configuration using Kontakt.io administration apps. We have tutorials available for both administration apps:

Synchronize configuration with iOS

Synchronize configuration with Android

iOS Administration App

To change the calibrated value of your beacons on the iOS administration app, select the beacon you want to modify and follow this steps:

1. Go to the iBeacon Configuration section and click on RSSI at 1 meter. You can also change the RSSI at 0 meters for Eddystone following the same steps.
2. Identify the Tx power for which you are changing the calibrated value and click on it.
3. You will be prompted for a new value. Please note that you don't need to add the minus '-' sign here. The app will add it automatically.
4. Enter the new value and click on done. You can edit all the calibrated values at the same time.
5. When you are done, click the device button, to go back.
6. Click the save button to apply the new calibrated values.
7. Writing process will begin.
8. Once it is completed, your new calibrated values will be synchronized on your beacon.

To change the calibrated value of your beacons on the Android administration app, select the beacon you want to modify from the list and follow this steps:

1. Go to the iBeacon Configuration section and click on RSSI at 1 meter. You can also change the RSSI at 0 meters for Eddystone, under Eddystone Configuration following the same steps.
2. Identify the Tx power for which you are changing the calibrated value and click on it.
3. You will be prompted for a new value. Please note that you need to add the minus '-' sign here.
4. Enter the new value and click on the check mark on the top right corner. You can edit all the calibrated values at the same time.
5. Once on the device detail view, you will need to scroll a bit up in order for the check mark to appear on the top right corner. Click on it for the synchronization process to start.
6. The device will look for your beacon and once detected, it will start writing the configuration.
7. Wait for the synchronization process to conclude.
8. Once it is completed, your new calibrated values will be synchronized on your beacon and the ready message will appear.
