What is Bluetooth Low Energy / Bluetooth Smart?

Bluetooth Low Energy (commonly known as BLE or Bluetooth Smart) is a subset of wireless personal area network technology first designed by Nokia® in 2006, and later adopted into the main Bluetooth® standard with version 4.0 in 2010.

BLE is designed to provide considerably lower power consumption compared to 'classic' Bluetooth, which makes it extremely useful for a wide range of new applications such as Beacons and other sensor driven implementations.
