Portal Light introduction

The Portal Light is Kontakt.io's primary Bluetooth® Low Energy (LE) gateway device. It scans and detects Kontakt.io BLE devices and sends received BLE data to Kio Cloud over the facility's existing Wi-Fi network.

With a Kontakt.io subscription, BLE beacons, tags, and badges automatically receive configuration updates over their BLE connection to a Portal Light.

Key features

    A Portal Light downloads pending updates during each connection to Kio Cloud; attempts to connect to Kio Cloud every 60 seconds.

  • Over-the-air (OTA) Kontakt.io BLE beacon configuration updates; requires Kontakt.io subscription.

    A Portal Light receives pending configuration updates for nearby BLE devices during each connection to Kio Cloud; attempts to connect to Kio Cloud every 60 seconds.

  • Built-in watchdog mechanism triggering device restart after one minute without sending data to event/collect endpoint. Watchdog is off when the device is not connected to the network.

Wi-Fi network specifications

  • Wireless networking protocols: 802.11 b/g/n (802.11n up to 150 Mbps) 2.4 GHz ~ 2.5 GHz

  • Wireless security protocols: Open, WEP, WPA (TKIP & AES), WPA2 (TKIP & AES) - Personal and Enterprise modes

  • Wireless authentication protocols: EAP-TLS, EAP-TTLS (MSCHAPv2), PEAP v0 (MSCHAPv2)

  • Network communication protocols: Hypertext Transfer Protocol Secure (HTTPS)/TLS 1.2

  • IP addressing: Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol (DHCP)

  • Supports two Wi-Fi networks; (1) Custom local Wi-Fi network and (2) Kontakt.io factory default network that is permanently stored on the device.

  • Automatic reconnection to Kontakt.io factory default network after ten failed attempts to connect to the custom network.

  • Watchdog on API connection; lack of API connection for more than two minutes triggers service restart.

Bluetooth parameters

  • Single scanning window can report the detection of up to 30 Bluetooth devices per second.

  • No parsing of scans on hardware level; performed on Cloud level.

  • Upload of detection data every five seconds.

  • Monitored BLE channels: 37, 38, 39.

  • During connection to beacon and uploading configuration, BLE scanning is stopped.

  • Scanning advertisement and scan response packets.
