Properly attaching Kontakt.io Asset Tags to equipment being tracked is an important step when deploying and managing a RTLS solution. The following provides guidelines and step-by-step instructions to ensure tags are securely and properly attached.
The primary goal is to ensure that an Asset Tag is visible, securely attached, and does not interfere with the equipment's functionality.
-
Visible and accessible location: Choose a location on the equipment that is easily visible and accessible. For example, do not place an asset tag on the underside of the tracked equipment.
-
Flat and smooth surface: Select a flat and smooth surface area on the equipment where the asset tag can be securely attached.
For curved or uneven surfaces, use of the zip tie attachment method is recommended.
-
Non-interference: Ensure that the placement of the asset tag does not interfere with any moving parts, buttons, or indicators on the equipment. It should not impede the functionality or readability of the equipment's control panel or display.
-
Consistency: If you are using asset tags across multiple pieces of equipment, try to maintain a consistent placement location.
-
Protective casing: If the equipment has a protective casing or cover, consider placing the asset tag on the casing instead of directly on the equipment. This allows for easier replacement or relocation of the tag.
-
Equipment storage: To ensure effective tracking of mobile equipment during storage, it is crucial to consider the visibility of asset tag placement. Be sure to avoid placing a tag in a location where equipment stacking might obstruct its visibility or potentially cause damage.
-
Equipment specifications: Check the equipment manufacturer's guidelines, if available, for any specific recommendations on where to place asset tags. Some manufacturers may provide specific areas or designated spots for attaching tags on their equipment.
Important
To ensure accurate IR tracking, it is recommended to place the Asset Tag at a high level.
Applies to deployments that include Portal Beams with IR.
The higher an Asset Tag is positioned, the better IR accuracy can be achieved. This is due to the improved line of sight between a Portal Beam with IR and a tag. When attaching the tag, consider mounting it at the highest feasible location on the equipment while ensuring visibility and accessibility.
Placing a tag at a high level maximizes the effectiveness of the IR technology and enhances the overall tracking accuracy.
It is essential to prepare the equipment surface properly before attaching an Asset Tag using the supplied double-sided tape. When using the zip tie method, it's also recommended to following these recommendations.
-
Clean the surface thoroughly using a non-abrasive cleaning solution appropriate for the equipment material.
Apply a small amount of the cleaning solution to a clean cloth or lint-free wipe. Gently wipe the equipment surface, removing any dust, dirt, or grease. Ensure thorough coverage of the area where the asset tag will be attached. Allow the surface to dry completely.
-
Ensure that the surface is dry and free from dust, dirt, oils, and other contaminants that may affect adhesion.
-
Ensure that both the equipment surface and the tape are at room temperature for best results.
Kontakt.io recommends using the below disinfectants or equivalent for cleaning both the surface of an Asset Tag and the equipment a tag is attached to. These commonly used disinfectants have undergone testing on Kontakt.io devices to ensure their compatibility and effectiveness.
Super Sani-Cloth® Germicidal Disposable Wipe, Sani-Cloth® Bleach Germicidal Disposable Wipe

Kontakt.io Asset Tags are supplied with 3M VHB Clear 4910 double-sided adhesive tape specifically designed for bonding transparent materials and other smooth surfaces. Optionally, tags can be attached to equipment using the zip tie method.
Be sure to avoid attaching to curved or uneven surfaces as they may affect the adhesion of the tape.
-
Remove protective film: Peel off the protective film from the adhesive side of the 3M tape on the back of the asset tag. This will expose the adhesive surface, which will be used to attach the tag to the equipment.
-
Positioning: Carefully position the asset tag with the exposed adhesive side onto the cleaned and prepared surface of the equipment. Align it properly in the desired location.
-
Firmly press: Once aligned, press the asset tag firmly onto the equipment surface, applying even pressure to ensure a secure bond. Hold the tag in place for a few seconds to allow the tape to adhere properly
-
Adhesion verification: After attaching the asset tag, lightly tug on it to verify the adhesion. Ensure that it is securely attached to the equipment surface.
Reapplication: If the asset tag does not adhere securely or needs to be repositioned, it is recommended to remove the tape completely and replace it with a new piece of 3M VHB Clear 4910 tape. Avoid reusing the same tape as it may affect adhesion strength.
For situations where there is a risk of an Asset Tag becoming dislodged or detached or for use with curved or uneven surfaces, use of the zip tie attachment method is recommended. For example, this method is commonly used when tags are attached to wheelchairs.
-
Choose a suitable location on the equipment for the asset tag placement. To ensure accurate IR tracking, it is recommended to place the tag at a high level.
-
Insert one end of a zip tie through a tag slot.
-
Gradually tighten the zip tie to securely attach the tag.
-
Verify the attachment by gently tugging on the tag.
-
Trim off any excess zip tie length.
-
Ensure the tag is clearly visible and unobstructed.
-
Repeat with additional zip ties if necessary.
