Use these checks when an Outdoor Gateway will not come online, or drops offline after mounting.
The Outdoor Gateway must detect nearby Kio Smart Badges over Bluetooth Low Energy. It must also reach a Base Station over LoRaWAN. Placement, orientation, and line-of-sight affect whether the gateway stays online.
For how Outdoor Staff Safe coverage works and how the devices communicate, see About Outdoor Staff Safe coverage.
Symptoms
You may see one or more of these issues:
- Kio Setup Manager cannot connect to the Outdoor Gateway.
- Kio Setup Manager shows a timeout error.
- The Outdoor Gateway does not appear Online in Device Management.
- The Outdoor Gateway came online before mounting but dropped offline after mounting.
- Outdoor Staff Safe coverage has a gap near the installed pole.
Before you begin
Before you begin, make sure the following are available:
- Access to the Kio Setup Manager mobile app with the Installer role.
- Access to Device Management.
- Bluetooth enabled on your mobile device.
- Internet access on your mobile device through Wi-Fi or cellular.
- A ladder, lift, or bucket truck if the Outdoor Gateway is already mounted.
- The deployment plan for Outdoor Gateway pole locations.
- The planned Base Station used for the Outdoor Gateway line-of-sight path.
Check the Base Station first
- Open Device Management.
- Verify at least one Base Station for the parking lot is Online.
- If no Base Station is online, troubleshoot the Base Station before retrying the Outdoor Gateway.
- If multiple Base Stations are installed, identify the one with the clearest signal path from the Outdoor Gateway pole.
Check the Outdoor Gateway power and antenna
- Confirm the antenna is attached to the Outdoor Gateway.
- Confirm the antenna is hand-tight.
- Confirm the Outdoor Gateway is powered on.
- If the device does not respond, power-cycle the Outdoor Gateway.
- Verify the button LED shows solid blue for a few seconds after power-on.
Warning: Do not power on the Outdoor Gateway without the antenna attached. Powering a LoRaWAN radio without its antenna can damage the RF stage.
Check the Kio Setup Manager connection window
The Outdoor Gateway is connectable for three minutes after power-on.
- Stand within 3 ft (1 m) of the Outdoor Gateway.
- Open the Kio Setup Manager mobile app.
- Tap Install.
- Select the parking-lot device category.
- Select Gateway as the device type.
- Scan the QR code on the Outdoor Gateway label, or select Enter ID manually and enter the Unique ID.
- If Kio Setup Manager cannot connect, power-cycle the Outdoor Gateway.
- Retry the install workflow within three minutes.
Check line-of-sight to the Base Station
- Stand at the Outdoor Gateway pole location.
- Identify the selected Base Station.
- Check whether buildings, building corners, dense trees, large signs, vehicle stacks, dumpster enclosures, or HVAC equipment block the path.
- If the path is blocked, point the Outdoor Gateway toward another Base Station with a clearer path.
- If no clear path exists, escalate to the deployment lead before moving the device to a new pole.
Check the mounting height
- Verify the Outdoor Gateway is mounted at least 9 ft (2.5 m) above the parking-lot surface.
- If possible, mount at or above 10 ft (3 m).
- Verify the Outdoor Gateway is not mounted higher than the luminaire arm.
- If the device is too low or too high, remount it at the planned height.
Mounting too low may allow vehicles and people to block badge detection. Mounting above the luminaire arm may allow pole metalwork to block the LoRaWAN path.
Check the device orientation
- Verify the antenna and power button face down toward the parking-lot surface.
- Verify the front face points toward the selected Base Station.
- Verify the device did not rotate during banding.
- If the device rotated, loosen the mounting kit, reposition the device, and secure it again.
- Verify the antenna still points down after tightening the straps.
Check spacing between Outdoor Gateways
- Compare the installed pole location with the deployment plan.
- Measure the distance to the nearest adjacent Outdoor Gateways.
- Verify adjacent Outdoor Gateways are spaced 80 ft to 120 ft (24 m to 37 m) apart.
- If the distance is greater than 120 ft, report a possible coverage gap to the deployment lead.
- If the distance is less than 80 ft, confirm the placement with the deployment lead before moving the device.
Check for nearby RF blockers or interference sources
Inspect the pole and nearby area.
-
Move or remount the device if it is behind:
- A luminaire head.
- Large signage.
- A dumpster enclosure.
- HVAC equipment.
- Dense tree cover.
-
Verify the Outdoor Gateway is not within 10 ft of:
- A high-power Wi-Fi access point.
- A cellular small cell.
- A two-way radio repeater mounted on the same pole.
Check map placement in Kio Setup Manager
- Open the device record or installation workflow in Kio Setup Manager.
- Verify the Outdoor Gateway is assigned to the correct Parking Lot floor.
- Verify the device is placed on the map at the correct pole location.
- If the map placement is wrong, update the location according to the deployment plan.
Outdoor Gateways are assigned at the Parking Lot floor level. There are no sub-levels such as zones or rows below the Parking Lot floor.
Retry installation
- Power-cycle the Outdoor Gateway.
- Stand within 3 ft (1 m) of the device.
- Open Kio Setup Manager.
- Scan the QR code or enter the Unique ID.
- Wait for the gateway to join the LoRaWAN network through a Base Station.
- Do not close Kio Setup Manager or walk away during the join step.
- Verify the success screen appears.
- Verify the Outdoor Gateway appears Online in Device Management.
Escalate the issue
Escalate to the deployment lead or Kontakt.io Support if:
- The Outdoor Gateway cannot connect in Kio Setup Manager after power-cycling.
- The Outdoor Gateway cannot join the LoRaWAN network even though a Base Station is online.
- The device comes online at ground level but drops offline after mounting.
- No installed Base Station has a clear signal path to the pole.
- Coverage gaps remain after spacing and orientation are checked.
Include the following details:
- Site name.
- Outdoor Gateway Unique ID.
- Outdoor Gateway pole location.
- Selected Base Station.
- Distance to the nearest Base Station, if known.
- Distance to adjacent Outdoor Gateways.
- Mounting height.
- Photos showing device orientation and line-of-sight.
- Screenshot or photo of any Kio Setup Manager error.
- Device status in Device Management.
