An investigation starts from a room and a time window, and works outward from there — who was in the room, how compliant each visit was, and where those people went next. This article covers the whole flow, from the first search to exporting what you found.
For what Contact Tracing is and how the data is bounded, see About Contact Tracing.
Before you begin
- You have the Contact tracer role in Hand Hygiene. No other role has access to Contact Tracing, including Administrator.
- You know the room to start from and roughly when the exposure occurred.
Conduct the investigation
A typical investigation moves through three steps on the same screen.
Step 1: Room Lens Search
Enter a room and time window to find everyone who visited.
- Under Room Lens Search, select a Building or Floor from the location picker.
- Choose the Room. Either select it from the list, or select Pick from map to choose it visually on the floor plan — useful when you know where a room is but not its number.
- Set the time range. Use a preset (Last 12h, Today, Yesterday, Last 3 days) or enter a custom Start and End time.
- Select Search Visits.
The search is limited to the selected room and time range. It returns visits that started during that window. A visit that started before the window is not included, even if the person was still in the room during it, so start the window early enough to cover anyone already in the room.
Step 2: Staff Found
The results list every staff member whose visit to the room started during the search window. The heading confirms what you searched — the room, the date, and the time window — so it is clear which investigation you are looking at.
| Column | What it shows |
|---|---|
| Staff | The staff member's name. |
| Role | Their Staff Role, such as Nurse. |
| Time of Visit | The start and end time of that visit. |
| Compliance | Hand hygiene for that visit: Full (both wash-in and wash-out), Partial (one of the two), or Zero (neither). |
| Actions | Add this staff member to the Investigation Log. |
The Compliance column is the one to read first. A visit marked Partial or Zero is a point where an infection could have traveled with that person to wherever they went next, which is what the travel path in the next step shows you.
Select a row to load that person's travel path.
To narrow a long list, filter it by Staff, Role, Time of Visit, or Compliance. To filter by time, set Start after and End before, then select Apply. If nothing matches, the list shows No Staff match your filters. Results are paged, and you can change how many appear per page.
Step 3: Locations visited
When you select a staff member in Staff Found, the Locations visited card opens — their travel path as a list of every room they visited during the same time window, in order.
Each stop in the travel path shows:
- The room name and visit time.
- A Wash In and Wash Out mark when that wash was recorded at the visit.
Select a room name on a stop to search that room over the same time window. The new search is added to Search History, so you can move from room to room without losing your place.
Turn on Show map to see the travel path on the floor plan. The Travel path timeline shows the same visits, with their compliance, as a time bar you can pan to focus on a specific period.
Investigation Log
The Investigation Log is where you collect the rooms and staff relevant to your investigation. On a narrower window, open it with the Investigation Log button in the page header. It builds the record as you work, so the findings scattered across several searches end up in one place.
Entries are grouped into Rooms and Staff, each with a count, so you can see at a glance how far an investigation has spread.
Add to the Investigation Log
- The room you are investigating — select Add Room to Investigation Log. This adds the room and the time window you searched.
- A staff member — in the results, select the add icon in the Actions column on their row.
- A room someone visited — in Locations visited, select the add icon on a room stop.
Each time you add an entry, a short form opens. Enter Notes (optional), then select Add to Investigation Log. Each entry records the visit context it came from and the time you added it.
Organize and prune the log
Drag an entry to reorder it, so the log can follow the sequence of events rather than the order you happened to find them. Remove an entry once you have ruled it out.
Add notes
Select any entry to add or change its notes — what you concluded, what still needs checking, who you spoke to. Notes are not saved once you close or reload the page.
Export the log
Select Export from the Investigation Log to download the log contents. Export is unavailable until the log has at least one entry. The export menu lists three formats:
- Excel (.xlsx) — a spreadsheet with rooms and staff on separate tabs.
- CSV (.csv) — a single rooms.csv or staff.csv when only one of the two lists has entries, or a ZIP file containing both rooms.csv and staff.csv when both lists have entries.
- PDF (.pdf) — a formatted document of the log contents.
The export includes the time range, room names, staff names, visit times, and compliance for each entry.
Search History
Past searches appear in the Search History panel. Select a past search to reload its results without re-entering the room and time window. The five most recent searches appear by default; select Show all to see the full list.
