A Space is a named collection of rooms and/or seats used to aggregate occupancy data. Where a room is a single mapped area on a floor, a Space combines several rooms and seats so that occupancy can be reported for the group as a whole. A Space can span multiple campuses, buildings, and floors, gathering any set of rooms and seats you want to see counted together.
Spaces are aimed at occupancy reporting. Apps that report on how spaces are used, such as Workspace Insights and the patient-occupancy apps, consume Spaces to roll up occupancy across the rooms and seats they contain.
Note: A Space is not the same as a footfall space. A Space aggregates occupancy across rooms and seats; a footfall space is a named area used by a Portal Beam in Footfall mode to count people moving between areas. See Footfall spaces.
How a space differs from a room and a department
Smart Location has three ways to group or define areas. They serve different purposes.

A Space groups rooms and seats for occupancy reporting. A department groups rooms for app views and reporting. A room can belong to a Space, a department, both, or neither, and being in one doesn't change its place in the campus, building, floor hierarchy.
How a Space is built
You manage Spaces from the Spaces area of Smart Location (Creator or Administrator role). You build a Space by giving it a name and adding the rooms and seats you want counted together. Because a Space can span campuses, buildings, and floors, the rooms and seats it contains do not have to be on the same floor or in the same building.
Once a Space exists, occupancy-reporting apps such as Workspace Insights and the patient-occupancy apps use it to report aggregated occupancy across the rooms and seats it contains.
