Installing a Portal Light connects it to your Wi-Fi network, synchronizes its clock, and assigns it to its room in Smart Location. Complete this workflow for each Portal Light in your deployment. The Portal Light must be powered on and physically accessible before you begin.
Before you begin
- Signed in to Kio Setup Manager mobile app with the Device Management role
- Portal Light order is claimed in Device Management
- Smart Location is complete — campus, building, floor, and room are created for the install location
- Wi-Fi network name (SSID) and password for the network at this location
- Portal Light is powered on at its mounting location
Important: If the Portal Light will join an enterprise Wi-Fi network (WPA2-Enterprise, TLS, TTLS, or PEAP), contact Kontakt.io support before starting. Enterprise Wi-Fi requires additional configuration that this workflow does not cover.
Steps
Tap Install in the bottom navigation bar.
Select Portal Light.
Select the Portal Light model: Portal Light, Portal Light 2, or Portal Light 2S.
Select Install new device.
-
Select the installation type:
- End-to-end installation — completes all steps including Wi-Fi setup. Use this for new deployments.
- Assign location only — skips Wi-Fi setup for a device that is already connected to a network. See Assign a Portal Light to a location instead.
Scan the QR code on the Portal Light label by tapping Scan device, or tap Enter ID manually and type the Unique ID.
-
On the Wi-Fi Network screen, enter the Wi-Fi Network SSID and Password.
Note: If the Portal Light has already scanned nearby networks, you can select the SSID from the Available Networks list instead of typing it. Tap the network name to populate the SSID field, then enter the password.
Tap Connect. Kio Setup Manager sends the Wi-Fi credentials to the Portal Light over Bluetooth.
-
Wait while the Portal Light reboots and connects to the network. This takes 1–3 minutes. The LED turns solid green when the connection succeeds.
Important: Do not close Kio Setup Manager or move away from the Portal Light during this step. If the LED does not turn green within 3 minutes, see Troubleshooting: Portal Light LED stays red.
-
When prompted, configure NTP:
- If your network requires a specific NTP server, tap Configure NTP and enter the server address.
- If your network uses standard internet NTP, tap Skip to continue.
Select the campus, building, floor, and room from the Smart Location hierarchy. Tap Next to confirm each level.
Tap Confirm location to assign the Portal Light to the room.
Tap Complete when the success screen appears.
What happens next
The Portal Light is connected to Wi-Fi and assigned to its Smart Location room. It appears as Online in Device Management within a few minutes. Device Health begins monitoring it automatically.
Repeat for each Portal Light in the deployment. Once all Portal Lights are installed and online, the Location Engine can begin computing positions for BLE devices in their coverage areas.
If the Portal Light does not appear as Online in Device Management within 5 minutes of installation, run Fetch diagnostic report from the device's action menu to identify the issue.
