Smart Location is the foundation of Kontakt.io’s intelligent care operations platform. It creates the digital twin of your campuses, buildings, floors, and spaces that Kio Apps and Kio Agents use to deliver location-aware workflows. Asset Tracker, Staff Safe, Hand Hygiene, Behavioral Health, Temperature Monitoring, workspace occupancy, and Kio Agents all rely on the locations set up in Smart Location.
A complete Smart Location setup helps ensure your solutions have the location context they need to support accurate insights, automation, alerts, and day-to-day operations.
Important: Smart Location must be fully configured, campus through rooms, before Infrastructure devices can be assigned to install locations. Without that, no Kio App can display room-level data.
What you manage in Smart Location

Why Smart Location matters
Kio Apps and Agents rely on Smart Location for location context. When Smart Location is complete, apps can use the same shared location structure to:
- Show events and devices on digital floor maps
- Report location at room level
- Assign Infrastructure devices to install locations
- Group rooms by department or space
- Filter dashboards, alerts, and search results by location
- Support automation and location-aware workflows
For example, a Staff Safe alert can show the room where help is needed, Asset Tracker can show where an asset was last detected, and Temperature Monitoring can associate a Temp Monitor with the Storage Unit or Room it monitors.
Basic setup flow
Smart Location setup follows a fixed order. Each step requires the previous one to be complete.
- Create a campus
- Add a building to the campus
- Add a floor to the building
- Upload a floor plan image for the floor
- Set the floor scale using two reference points
- Draw the floor outline
- Add and draw the rooms within the floor
- Create departments, spaces, or footfall spaces as needed
After rooms are drawn and configured, Kio Setup Manager can assign Infrastructure devices to rooms, and Kio Apps can begin detecting device locations and events to specific locations.
Cisco Spaces accounts
For deployments integrated with Cisco Spaces, floor plan maps are imported into Smart Location by the Kontakt.io team. Do not create or upload floor plans manually. Room mapping is managed through the Cisco Spaces integration and will be overwritten if set up independently.
