Create an Alert Rule to notify people when a condition needs attention, such as a Storage Unit reading excursion, Room reading excursion, Monitor hardware error, or Monitor offline event.
You need a separate Alert Rule for each condition type you want to monitor. Until a Storage Unit, Room, or Monitor is included in an active Alert Rule, Temperature Monitoring can still detect and record excursions or device issues, but no alert is triggered and no notifications are sent.
The Alert Rule wizard guides you through six steps: General, Locations, Applies To, Conditions, Actions, and Summary.
Before you begin
Make sure the following setup is complete:
- You’re signed in with the Administrator or System Manager role.
- The Storage Units, Rooms, or Monitors you want the rule to cover already exist.
- For Room alert rules, the Room appears in Temperature Monitoring only after a Monitor is installed for that Room.
- For threshold alerts, each Storage Unit or Room has a Threshold Setting assigned. The rule cannot evaluate readings without one.
- You have the email addresses or mobile phone numbers for anyone who should receive alert notifications. Recipients don’t have to be Kio Cloud users.
- To notify a third-party system, the webhook is already set up in Kio Cloud Company Settings.
Tip: To create a rule based on an existing one, copy it from the Alert Rules list. The copied rule opens in the wizard with the original settings pre-filled. Review each step before saving, especially the rule name, locations, covered Storage Units, Rooms, or Monitors, notification recipients, reminders, and escalations.
Create the rule
From the Kontakt.io Launchpad, open Temperature Monitoring.
Go to Settings > Alert Rules.
Select Create Alert Rule.
Choose the alert type for the condition that should trigger an alert:
- Threshold alert for Storage Unit: Triggers when a Storage Unit has a temperature or humidity reading excursion, meaning a reading is outside its assigned Threshold Setting.
- Threshold alert for Room: Triggers when a Room has a temperature or humidity reading excursion, meaning a reading is outside its assigned Threshold Setting.
- Hardware error alert: Triggers when a Monitor reports a hardware or configuration issue, such as a probe disconnection, sensor error, or configuration error.
- Monitor offline alert: Triggers when a Monitor stops reporting.
- Data out of sync alert: Triggers when a Monitor has not synced its recorded data within the window you select: 7, 14, or 21 days.
On the General step, enter an Alert Name that will be recognizable in notifications and the Alerts list.
Optionally, add an Alert description.
Set the Severity. Severity is required and defaults to Medium. Options are Critical, High, Medium, Low, and Info.
Keep Activate Alert Rule after saving selected so the rule starts monitoring after you save it.
On the Locations step, select the campus, building, or floor the rule covers.
For Threshold alert for Room rules, location selection is included in the next step because Rooms are already organized by location in Smart Location.
On the Applies To step, select the Storage Units, Rooms, or Monitors the rule covers.
Anything you don’t select here is not covered by this rule.
On the Conditions step, review the condition for the selected alert type.
Conditions are set by the alert type and are always on. You don’t need to select or adjust individual conditions. The one exception is the Data out of sync alert: on its Conditions step, choose the sync window of 7, 14, or 21 days (the default is 7).
On the Actions step, set how people or systems are notified when the alert triggers:
- Add notification recipients by email or phone number for SMS text messages.
- Select a webhook if the alert should notify a third-party system.
- Optionally, add reminders to re-notify the same recipients while the alert remains unacknowledged or unresolved.
- Optionally, add escalations to notify additional people through a different Group if the alert still needs attention after a set amount of time.
Every triggered alert also appears in the Temperature Monitoring Alerts list, regardless of the notification channels selected.
On the Summary step, review the rule.
Select Save.
Result
The rule appears in Settings > Alert Rules.
If Activate Alert Rule after saving was selected, the rule is saved as Active and begins monitoring immediately. When the condition occurs for a covered Storage Unit, Room, or Monitor, Temperature Monitoring triggers an alert, sends the configured notifications, and adds the alert to the Alerts list.
For threshold alerts, the alert triggers only after the threshold alert delay has passed.
To confirm coverage, check the Monitoring view. Covered Storage Units should no longer show Alert setup required.
Important: If you clear Activate Alert Rule after saving, the rule is saved as Inactive. Inactive rules don’t trigger alerts or send notifications until they’re activated.
