This glossary defines the terms, statuses, and settings used throughout Hand Hygiene. For how these combine into the numbers on the Compliance Analytics page, see About compliance.
Opportunities and visits
| Term | Definition |
|---|---|
| Patient room visit | Period when a Smart Badge is detected inside a room. Begins when the Beam Mini first reads the badge in the room. Ends when the badge leaves or signal is lost. |
| Hand Hygiene opportunity | A patient room visit that meets the criteria to be evaluated for compliance. The criteria come from the Room Type, the Staff Type Rules attached to it, and the Minimum Visit Duration. |
| Wash window | The time in which a dispense counts toward an opportunity. It opens the Valid Wash-In Period before the badge enters the room and closes the Valid Wash-Out Period after it leaves, including the time in the room. Any dispenser counts. |
| Wash-in | The first wash credited to an opportunity. A single wash in the wash window is always recorded as the wash-in. |
| Wash-out | The second wash credited to an opportunity: the latest of two or more washes in the wash window. |
| Dispense event | A use of a soap or sanitizer dispenser detected by a Dispenser Beacon. |
Opportunity statuses
Each opportunity has separate statuses for wash-in and wash-out.
| Status | Meaning |
|---|---|
| Pending | The visit is still open, or the system is waiting for the wash window to close before determining the outcome. |
| Done | A wash was credited. |
| Unfulfilled | The wash window closed without a wash to credit. |
Compliance categories
Each opportunity gets a score of 100%, 50%, or 0%.
| Category | Wash-in | Wash-out | Score |
|---|---|---|---|
| Fully compliant | Done | Done | 100% |
| Partial | Done | Unfulfilled | 50% |
| Non-compliant | Unfulfilled | Unfulfilled | 0% |
The score is separate from the wash-in and wash-out statuses described earlier: the statuses track each wash, and the score combines them. The Compliance Analytics page averages these scores into Overall Compliance, and also shows the Full: and Any: rates. See About compliance.
Configuration parameters
These are set in the Opportunity Configuration section of the Hand Hygiene Configuration card on the Settings page.
| Parameter | Definition |
|---|---|
| Minimum Visit Duration | Minimum time, in seconds, a Smart Badge must be in a room for the visit to count as an opportunity. A shorter visit is removed and is not counted as a missed opportunity. |
| Valid Wash-In Period | How long, in seconds, before room entry a dispense can count toward the opportunity. For example, sanitizing in the corridor before walking in. |
| Valid Wash-Out Period | How long, in seconds, after room exit a dispense can count toward the opportunity. For example, sanitizing in the corridor after leaving. |
| Compliance Thresholds | A range slider with two handles that sets three performance zones: Needs Work (red), Okay (yellow), and Good (green). The Compliance Analytics page uses these zones to color results. |
Opportunities that are removed
Some opportunities are removed instead of scored, so they do not count toward any compliance figure.
| Case | What happens |
|---|---|
| Short visit | A visit shorter than the Minimum Visit Duration is removed. |
| Low-confidence dispense | A dispense detected with too little confidence to say whose badge it was does not count as a wash, and can cause the opportunity to be removed rather than scored as non-compliant. |
| Signal-loss re-entry | If a Smart Badge briefly loses signal and is detected again in the same room, the system treats it as one visit, not two. |
| Obsolete open visit | An open visit that goes more than 12 hours without an exit signal is removed. |
Signal confidence
Signal confidence is the system's measure of how certain it is that a specific Smart Badge, rather than an adjacent one, used a dispenser. The threshold is 80% and is set by the platform; it is not configurable in Hand Hygiene Settings.
