A Hand Hygiene deployment moves through eight phases, in order. Each one depends on the ones before it: devices need locations to be assigned to, a Dispenser Beacon needs its Dispenser Type to exist, and validation needs a staff member wearing an assigned badge. This overview is for program owners and infection prevention leads planning a rollout. The step-by-step version for the people doing the work is the Hand Hygiene setup guide.
The eight phases
| Phase | What happens |
|---|---|
| 1. Set up Kio Cloud | Users and roles for the setup team, the campus, building, floor, and room layout with floor plans, departments, and claiming the Kontakt.io device order. |
| 2. Install gateways and room sensors | Portal Lights, or your existing Bluetooth-compatible Wi-Fi access points, plus a room sensor (Beam Mini or Portal Beam) in every patient room and along the corridors between them. |
| 3. Create Dispenser Types | One Dispenser Type for each dispenser model in the facility, saying whether it holds soap or sanitizer. |
| 4. Configure Hand Hygiene | Staff Roles, Room Types and the rules that decide when a visit is an opportunity, Room Matching, the wash-in and wash-out timing, the low refill level, and Alert Rules for refills. |
| 5. Add staff and assign Smart Badges | A staff profile for every badge wearer, each assigned to their department, then a Smart Badge assigned to each staff member. |
| 6. Install Dispenser Beacons | A Dispenser Beacon on or in each dispenser, installed with Kio Setup Manager, and the hand hygiene reminder set up in the rooms that need it. |
| 7. Validate with Test Mode | A test user wears a badge through several rooms and uses dispensers, to confirm visits, dispenses, and opportunities appear as expected. |
| 8. Roll out to staff | Badges handed out, badge wearers and the staff who refill dispensers briefed, and optionally Rewards and Kio Nurse Assistant for nurses. |
Decisions to make before the on-site team starts
- Which rooms need the hand hygiene reminder. The reminder is set up dispenser by dispenser during Phase 6, and each one needs a Portal Light and a room sensor in the room. Plan it, and the devices it needs, before Phase 2. See About Hand Hygiene.
- Your department names. Staff are matched to their department by its exact name, so agree the names once and use them everywhere.
- Which dispensers you have. The dispenser decides the Dispenser Beacon: ES8 and ES10 dispensers take their own Dispenser Beacons, and other supported models take the Universal Dispenser Beacon. See About Dispenser Beacons.
- Who needs to sign in. Most badge wearers never sign in. Decide who needs the web app, the Team Dashboard, or Kio Nurse Assistant, and which role each person gets. See About user access to Hand Hygiene.
After go-live
Compliance data starts to appear within a few hours. Two things keep a deployment healthy from then on: Device Health alert rules for offline Portal Lights and low device batteries, and regular firmware updates in Device Management. See the "After setup" section of the Hand Hygiene setup guide.
