Drawing rooms creates the boundary polygons the Location Engine uses to determine which room a Tag or device is in. Each polygon you draw becomes a room on the floor. You draw the room, give it a name, and — when the deployment calls for it — add seats for seat-level occupancy. Rooms must be drawn and named before devices can be assigned to the floor and before any Kio App can display room-level location data.
A room's type is set when you draw it — you pick the drawing tool for the kind of space you're adding. The name is set in the room's properties. For what each type means, see Room types and room properties.
Before you begin
- Signed in to Kio Cloud with the Smart Location Administrator or Creator role
- Floor plan image uploaded, map scale set, and floor outline drawn (see Add a floor and set up its floor plan)
- Physical floor plan or site map available for reference while drawing
Step 1: Draw the room
- Open Smart Location and navigate to the floor.
- Select Edit.
- From Room Outlines, select the type to add — Add room, Add corridor, or Add virtual room.
- From the map, choose the drawing tool for the type of space you're adding
- Select points along the boundary of the room to draw its polygon. Close the polygon by selecting the first point or using the Finish control.
Tips for accurate room drawing
- Draw to physical boundaries. Match room polygons to actual walls shown on the floor plan. A polygon that spans multiple physical spaces produces inaccurate location data — a Tag in Room A will appear to be in Room B if the boundary is wrong.
- No overlaps. A room or corridor can't overlap another — Smart Location prevents you from drawing a polygon that overlaps an existing one.
- Include corridors. Map the hallways and passages between rooms as corridors. Like a room, a corridor is a mapped space where assets and people are located, so mapping corridors keeps location coverage continuous across the floor.
- Cover the whole floor. Every part of the floor plan within the outline should belong to at least one polygon, either a room or a corridor. Unmapped areas produce uncertain location data for devices in those spaces.
Step 2: Name the room
A room isn't fully usable until it has a name. Name each room as you draw it.
- Enter a Name for the room. Maximum 50 characters.
- Select Save.
Repeat Steps 1 and 2 for each room, corridor, and virtual room on the floor. Once every room has a name, devices can be assigned to rooms during Kio Setup Manager installation.
Step 3 (optional): Add seats for seat-level occupancy
Seats define named positions within a room or virtual room, used for seat-level occupancy reporting. When a Portal Beam monitors individual chairs or workstations, the system can report which seats are occupied, not just whether the space as a whole is occupied. Skip this step unless the deployment specifically requires seat-level reporting.
- Select the room or virtual room on the map or from the rooms list.
- Select Edit.
- Under Add seats (max 6), choose the number of seats the space has.
- For each seat, enter a Seat Name/Id (for example, "Seat 1" or a desk number).
- Select Save.
Smart Location places the seat markers on the map. Seat-level occupancy data flows once the Portal Beam is installed and operating in seat-occupancy mode for this room or virtual room.
What happens next
With rooms drawn and named, the floor is ready for device installation in Kio Setup Manager, and Kio Apps can begin reporting room-level location.
