A floor sits within a building. Adding a floor creates the floor record, but the record alone isn't usable: before you can draw rooms or assign devices, you set up the floor plan. Smart Location walks you through it — upload the plan image, set the map scale, and draw the floor outline. The steps must be completed in order, and the floor can't be used until they're done.
Caution: Once you save the map scale (reference points) and the floor outline, they can't be changed. Confirm both are correct before saving.
Before you begin
- Signed in to Kio Cloud with the Smart Location Administrator or Creator role
- Campus and building created in Smart Location
- Floor plan image file ready: JPG, PNG, BMP, or TIFF, up to 1 MB
- A measurement between two identifiable points on the floor plan, for scale calibration. For example, the length of a known corridor or the distance between two column centers. Measure in feet or meters.
Step 1: Add the floor
- Open Smart Location from the Kio Cloud Launchpad.
- Navigate to the building where the floor will be added.
- Select Add floor.
- Enter a Name for the floor (for example, "Ground Floor" or "Floor 3").
- Enter the Level number. Use 0 for ground level, 1 for first floor, and so on. The level number controls the order floors appear in navigation.
- Select Save.
The floor appears under the building in the navigation. Its status indicates that setup is not yet complete. Open the floor to continue.
Step 2: Upload the floor plan image
- With the floor open, attach the floor plan image. If the floor already has a plan and you need to replace it, select Re-upload floor plan. (Edit Floor changes only the floor's level and name, not the plan image.)
- Select the floor plan image file and upload it.
The image appears as the base map for the floor. Continue to the Map scale step.
Supported formats: JPG, PNG, BMP, or TIFF, up to 1 MB. Empty files are rejected. If the upload fails, see Troubleshooting: Floor plan upload fails.
Step 3: Set the map scale
The Map scale step tells Smart Location the relationship between pixels in the image and real-world distance. This calculation determines the accuracy of every room boundary and device position on the floor.
- Click on the map to set the first reference point on a location you can measure in real life.
- Set the second reference point on a second location.
- Provide the distance between the points.
- Select the unit: feet or meters.
- Select Next to Floor Outline.
Choose reference points that are as far apart as possible and easy to measure precisely. Longer baselines reduce proportional measurement error. Column centers, room corners, and door frames are good candidates if they appear clearly on the floor plan.
Step 4: Draw the floor outline
The Floor outline defines the usable boundary of the floor: the area within which rooms can be drawn. It's a polygon traced on the floor plan image.
- Use the rectangle or polygon tool to draw an outline around the buildable floor area.
- Select Finish to close the outline.
- Select Next to Room Outlines to continue.
The outline doesn't need to match the building's outer wall exactly. It should encompass all the areas where rooms will be drawn. Rooms can't be placed outside the outline.
Caution: Once the floor outline is configured, it can't be modified.
Step 5: Verify
The floor plan is ready when:
- The floor plan image is visible as the map background
- The scale indicator shows the calibrated distance
- The floor outline appears as a polygon on the map
You can now draw rooms on this floor.
