A gateway is the infrastructure device that relays Tag data to Kio Cloud. The Gateways tab is where you place a floor's gateways on the map, pinning each one to its room and to a precise point on the floor plan so the platform knows where the device sits.
A gateway on a floor can be:
- a Portal Light (Portal Light, Portal Light 2, or Portal Light 2S) — the Kontakt.io gateway, mounted in a fixed position and sending data to the platform over Wi-Fi
- a Cloud Beacon — a legacy Kontakt.io gateway
- an External gateway — a third-party device acting as a gateway, for example a Cisco Catalyst Access Point
Gateways are usually placed during installation with Kio Setup Manager. Manage them in Smart Location when you need to add a gateway to the map, correct its position, or remove one.
Note: Gateway placement on the floor map records where the device is. It does not replace installation. A Portal Light must still be installed and configured with Kio Setup Manager to connect to Wi-Fi and send data.
Before you begin
- Signed in to Kio Cloud with the Smart Location Administrator or Creator role
- Floor plan set up, with rooms drawn (see Add a floor and set up its floor plan)
- The gateway claimed in Device Management and available for placement
Open the gateways view
- Open Smart Location from the Kio Cloud Launchpad.
- Navigate to the floor.
- Open the floor's Gateways management view.
The floor map shows the gateways already placed on this floor.
Add a gateway to the floor
- In the gateways view, choose the gateway to place.
- Position it on the floor map at the device's real-world location within its room.
- Save the placement.
Place each gateway as close as possible to where it is physically mounted. The Location Engine uses the gateway's position to compute room-level location, so an inaccurate position reduces accuracy.
Reposition a gateway
- In the gateways view, select the gateway on the floor map.
- Move it to the correct position within the room.
- Save the change.
Remove a gateway
- In the gateways view, select the gateway on the floor map.
- Remove it from the floor.
Removing a gateway from the floor map removes its placement only. It does not unclaim the device or change its status in Device Management.
Note: If you try to place a gateway that is already assigned to another location, Smart Location reports a conflict. Remove the device from its previous location first, or confirm you have the correct device.
What happens next
Place the infrastructure devices the floor uses (see Manage infrastructure on a floor), then confirm the floor's devices appear in the live view. See View live location on a floor.
