Manage infrastructure on a floor

The Infrastructure tab is where you place a floor's stationary infrastructure devices on the map — the beams, beacons, and monitors that sense presence, traffic, or position. Each device is pinned to a point on the floor plan so the Location Engine knows where it sits. (Gateways have their own tab; see Manage gateways on a floor.)

Infrastructure devices are usually placed during installation with Kio Setup Manager. Manage them in Smart Location when you need to add one to the map, correct its position, or remove it.

Infrastructure devices

The Infrastructure tab lists the devices placed on the floor. Depending on your deployment, these can include:

  • Portal Beam — room or seat occupancy. A Portal Beam set to Footfall mode appears as Traffic Portal Beam.
  • Beam IR (Portal Beam IR)
  • Beam Mini and Beam Mini 2
  • Anchor Beacon and Anchor Beacon 2 — stationary reference devices that give the Location Engine a known fixed point to improve accuracy
  • Dispenser beacon, Universal dispenser beacon, and ES10 dispenser beacon
  • Temp Monitor Pro and Temp Monitor Lite
  • Partner Device — a third-party infrastructure device (for example, Thingsee Presence)

Before you begin

  • Signed in to Kio Cloud with the Smart Location Administrator or Creator role
  • Floor plan set up, with rooms drawn (see Add a floor and set up its floor plan)
  • For a Portal Beam in Footfall mode: footfall spaces created (see Create a footfall space)
  • The device claimed in Device Management and available for placement

Open the Infrastructure view

  1. Open Smart Location from the Kio Cloud Launchpad.
  2. Navigate to the floor.
  3. Open the floor's Infrastructure management view.

The floor map shows the infrastructure devices already placed on this floor.

Add a device to the floor

  1. In the Infrastructure view, choose the device to place.
  2. Position it on the floor map at the device's real-world location within its room.
  3. For a Portal Beam in Footfall mode, assign footfall spaces to its Inbound and Outbound directions. This is how the system counts people moving between footfall spaces. Each direction is optional: assign footfall spaces to both directions to count traffic both ways, or to a single direction for a one-way count at a doorway or entryway.
  4. Save the placement.

Place each device as close as possible to where it is physically mounted. The Location Engine uses the device's position to compute room-level location, so an inaccurate position reduces accuracy.

Note: A Portal Beam in Footfall mode needs its footfall spaces in place before it can count correctly. Create footfall spaces first, then assign them to the Inbound and Outbound directions. See Footfall spaces.

Reposition a device

  1. In the Infrastructure view, select the device on the floor map.
  2. Move it to the correct position.
  3. Save the change.

Remove a device

  1. In the Infrastructure view, select the device on the floor map.
  2. Remove it from the floor.

Removing a device from the floor map removes its placement only. It does not unclaim the device or change its status in Device Management.
