The Smart Location hierarchy organizes the physical locations used across the Kontakt.io platform. It defines where campuses, buildings, floors, and rooms sit in relation to each other. Rooms are the foundational location unit. Every Kontakt.io solution uses the rooms you define in Smart Location to answer its core location question: which room a person, device, asset, or event is in.
Each level of the hierarchy must exist before the next one can be created:
- Campus
- Building
- Floor
- Room
A complete hierarchy gives Kio Apps and Kio Agents the location context they need to report events, show floor maps, assign devices, trigger alerts, and display room-level insights.
Why the hierarchy matters
The hierarchy is the path location data takes through the platform. Any location event, such as a staff duress alert, asset search, hand hygiene event, occupancy signal, or temperature excursion, is reported through the hierarchy to a specific room.
That room-level result is what Kio Apps consume.
A room without a floor, or a floor without a building, cannot be used by Kio Apps. A floor without rooms cannot report room-level data.
The four levels
Campus
A campus is the top of the location hierarchy. It usually represents a physical site, such as a hospital complex, a warehouse facility, or a corporate campus. It can also represent any logical grouping of buildings within a deployment.
Create a separate campus for each site that is managed independently. A campus has a name and an address. Selecting an address positions the campus marker on the map.
Building
A building sits within a campus, and each building is a separate record in the hierarchy. Standard buildings and parking lot structures are both supported. Parking lot buildings use a distinct type, which affects how their floors and rooms are categorized.
Buildings store a name and can optionally store coordinates to position them within the campus view.
Floor
A floor sits within a building. Each floor has a level number (for example, 0 for ground level, 1 for the first floor) and a name. The level number and name together control where the floor appears in the navigation. Levels are unique within a building: if you enter a level that already exists, Smart Location automatically adjusts it to the next available level.
A floor without a floor plan image is not usable. The floor plan is the base map for drawing rooms, placing devices, and displaying live location data. Rooms cannot be created until the image is uploaded, the scale is calibrated, and the floor outline is drawn.
Room
A room is the foundational unit of both location and occupancy data in the Kontakt.io platform — the unit every solution consumes. The platform determines, in real time and over time, whether a person or thing is inside or outside each room, and the boundary drawn in Smart Location is what it uses to make that determination. Room-level certainty is what makes staff safety, nurse-call, hand hygiene, patient-staff analytics, inventory, and occupancy reporting possible.
Room quality matters. A boundary drawn too broadly, spanning a corridor and two real rooms, will place Tags and devices in the wrong room. Draw room boundaries to match the physical space as closely as the floor plan allows.

What cannot be skipped
Every level is required for the platform to function. The most common gaps:
