IR signal testing confirms that a Smart Badge in the space is receiving the IR room number broadcast from a Portal Beam IR and reporting it correctly in its telemetry. Run this after installing a Portal Beam IR to verify end-to-end signal delivery before leaving the site.
A Smart Badge must be physically present in the space during this test — it is the receiver of the IR signal. The test cannot pass without one.
Note: This article covers the Portal Beam IR model. For Beam Mini IR signal testing, see Test Beam Mini IR mode.
Before you begin
- Signed in to Kio Setup Manager with the Device Management role
- Portal Beam IR is installed in IR mode and within Bluetooth range of your mobile device
- An activated Smart Badge is present and powered on in the space, within line-of-sight of the Portal Beam IR
Steps
Open the device detail view for the IR-mode device:
- Tap Devices > Nearby and select it from the list, or
- Tap Scan and scan the QR code on the device label
Tap the actions menu and select Test IR.
Note: You can also access this from the Tools screen — tap Tools, select Beam Troubleshooting, then select Test IR.
Kio Setup Manager looks for a nearby Smart Badge:
- Looking for tag
- Waiting for IR signal (times out after 30 seconds)
The test validates that the room number reported in the Smart Badge's telemetry matches the room number configured on the device.
Review the test result:
Result Meaning Action Test occupancy correct Smart Badge received the IR signal and reported the correct room number No action needed — IR mode is working correctly Test occupancy failed — room number mismatch Smart Badge received an IR signal but reported a different room number Verify the room number configured on this device matches the deployment plan; if multiple IR devices are nearby, confirm Smart Badge is receiving the correct one Test occupancy failed — no room number in telemetry Smart Badge is not receiving the IR signal Confirm Smart Badge is powered on and within line-of-sight; confirm the blink interval is not set too long; retry the test Not found device No Smart Badge was detected nearby Confirm a Smart Badge is powered on in the space and within Bluetooth range of your mobile device
What happens next
A passing test confirms the IR signal is correctly bridging room identity to Smart Badge telemetry. If the test fails, use the result to identify whether the issue is placement (line-of-sight), configuration (room number mismatch), or hardware (badge not receiving signal).
