Footfall mode configures the Portal Beam to count people crossing a threshold — tracking entries and exits as separate cumulative totals. Use this mode above doorways, corridor junctions, or any point where directional traffic flow needs to be measured.
Footfall placement is critical. The Portal Beam must be mounted directly above the crossing point, oriented so the detection line aligns with the threshold. Incorrect placement produces inaccurate counts.
The operation mode is set at installation and cannot be changed without re-running the installation workflow.
Before you begin
- Signed in to Kio Setup Manager mobile app with the Device Management role
- Portal Beam order is claimed in Device Management
- Smart Location is complete — campus, building, floor, and room are created for the install location
- A Portal Light is installed and online at this location — the Portal Beam relies on it to reach Kio Cloud
- Portal Beam is physically mounted directly above the doorway or threshold it will monitor, centered on the crossing point
Steps
- Tap Install in the bottom navigation bar.
- Select Portal Beam.
- Select the device model: Portal Beam, Portal Beam IR, Beam Mini, or Beam Mini 2.
- Select Footfall.
- Scan the QR code on the Portal Beam label by tapping Scan device, or tap Enter ID manually and type the Unique ID.
- Configure the Traffic Footfall Line — the virtual line across the threshold that the Portal Beam uses to count crossings. Set the line direction to match the physical orientation of the Portal Beam relative to the doorway.
- Kio Setup Manager sends the Footfall configuration to Kio Cloud. Wait for the confirmation message.
- Select the campus, building, floor, and room from the Smart Location hierarchy. Tap Next to confirm each level.
- Tap Confirm location to assign the device.
- Tap Complete when the success screen appears.
What happens next
The Portal Beam is configured for Footfall and assigned to its Smart Location room. It begins counting crossings and reporting In and Out totals to Kio Cloud through the nearest Portal Light.
Verify footfall detection is working by opening the device detail view — the In and Out telemetry fields show cumulative crossing counts. Walk through the doorway in both directions to confirm entries and exits are being counted correctly before leaving the site.
