Test Mode replays what Hand Hygiene detected — rooms entered, dispensers used, and how each wash was credited — on one shared time axis. Use it to confirm a deployment is working, or to find out why a particular opportunity did not score the way you expected.
Where it is, and who has access
Test Mode is at Settings > Test Mode. Only the Hand Hygiene Administrator role has access to it.
How the page is built
Test Mode shows two timelines, stacked and aligned to the same clock:
- Badges — one row per badge you select, with that person's opportunities drawn as blocks.
- Dispensers — one row per dispenser you add, with each dispense drawn as a point in time.
Reading them together is the point. A dispense that lines up with an opportunity block explains a score; one outside every block explains a miss.
Time range
The range control has four options, and the page reloads both timelines when you change it:
| Option | Window |
|---|---|
| Last hour | The previous 60 minutes |
| Last 8 hours | The previous 8 hours — roughly one shift |
| Last 24 hours | The previous full day |
| Today | Midnight to now |
Test Mode is built for short windows. For trends over weeks, use the Compliance Analytics page and reports.
The configuration summary
Beneath the range control, Test Mode shows the three settings that decide how an opportunity scores, in the form Min visit 120s · Wash-in 90s · Wash-out 90s. Point at it for the full labels:
| Setting | What it controls |
|---|---|
| Minimum visit duration | How long a person must stay in a room before the visit counts as an opportunity |
| Valid wash-in before entrance | How long before entering a wash still counts as the wash-in |
| Valid wash-out after leaving | How long after leaving a wash still counts as the wash-out |
These are the live values from Opportunity configuration. Seeing them beside the timeline matters: most surprising results turn out to be a dispense that fell a few seconds outside one of these windows.
Choosing badges
Test Mode shows nothing until you pick at least one badge. On an empty page you get Restore last selection (N badges), which brings back the badges you used last time, and Choose badges yourself.
The Badges selector searches your staff. Enter at least three characters to search, or pick from All staff or Recent. Selected badges appear as chips beside the selector, and Clear all removes them.
Each badge row shows the staff member's name and the MAC address of their Smart Badge, so you can confirm you are looking at the badge you physically hold.
What the Badges timeline shows
The header summarizes the window: N opportunities · N full · N half · N missed.
Each opportunity is a block, filled according to how it scored:
| Fill | Meaning |
|---|---|
| 100% — Full compliance | Both the wash-in and the wash-out were credited |
| 50% — Partial compliance | One of the two was credited |
| 0% — Zero compliance | Neither was credited |
Point at an opportunity to see when the person entered and exited, and a plain-language account of what happened — for example Washed 12s after entering, within the visit., No wash credited before entering., or Washed 30s after leaving. Where a visit is too short to draw to scale it is marked visit · compressed.
Turn on Show dispenses to draw each credited dispense onto the badge's own row, at the moment it happened. Test Mode remembers this setting, and the last dispenser shortcut you used, the next time you open it.
What the Dispensers timeline shows
Add dispensers with the Add Dispensers selector, or use the two shortcuts:
- Used by selected badges — every dispenser the badges you picked actually triggered in this window.
- All in this time period — every dispenser with a dispense in the window, whoever triggered it.
The header summarizes: N dispenses · N by selected badges · N outside any opportunity. When some dispenses haven't been evaluated yet, the header adds · N not evaluated.
Point at a dispense to see how it was treated:
| State | Meaning |
|---|---|
| Attributed to an opportunity | The dispense was credited to an opportunity |
| Outside any opportunity | It does not change any compliance score |
| Attachment not evaluated | Hand Hygiene has not yet decided where it belongs |
| credited to name | The dispense counted for that person's badge |
| credited to name · not selected | The dispense counted for someone whose badge you have not selected |
| No badge credited | No badge was close enough to be credited |
Where several dispenses fall too close together to draw apart, Test Mode groups them and shows the count. Narrow the time range to separate them.
Both timelines carry a Legend for these states.
Advanced diagnostics
Turn on the Advanced diagnostics switch in the page header when you need to know why a dispense was credited to one person rather than another. Test Mode remembers the setting the next time you open it.
With the switch on, the page shows an Advanced Diagnostic panel with the timelines. Instead of pointing at an opportunity or a dispense, you select it, and its details stay open in the panel until you select something else or close the panel.
- An opportunity: the panel shows the opportunity record, with the entry and exit times and the account of each wash.
- A dispense: the panel shows the dispense record, with the dispenser name, its location, and who was credited. The panel then explains how the credit was decided.
- A group of dispenses: the panel lists the dispenses in the group. Select one to see its details.
How a dispense's credit is explained
For a selected dispense, the panel shows up to four parts.
Opportunities open at time lists the badges that had an opportunity open at the moment of the dispense. Each row shows the staff member's opportunity as a bar around the moment of the dispense, and either the signal strength or how the badge was considered (inherited, in department, or on floor). A tick marks the badge that was credited. A sentence after the list states the rule that decided the credit. If no badge had an open opportunity, the list reads No opportunities to show. The reasons a badge was set aside are in Badge scan breakdown.
Badge scan breakdown lists the badges the dispenser heard when it was used, with the strength of each badge's signal. A stronger signal usually means the badge was closer to the dispenser. The strength is shown as a bar and in dBm: the closer the number is to zero, the stronger the signal, so -55 dBm is stronger than -80 dBm. Each badge is marked credited or with the reason it was set aside:
| Reason | Meaning |
|---|---|
| below signal threshold | The signal was too weak to count the badge as present at the dispenser. |
| too far below strongest | The signal was much weaker than the strongest badge's, so this badge was not considered. |
| already fully compliant | The person's opportunity already had both washes. |
| no open opportunity | The person had no opportunity the dispense could count toward. |
Inherited badges lists badges that the dispenser didn't hear but that were in the room with a badge it did hear. They are considered as if they were at the dispenser.
Nearby badges lists badges that were neither heard nor in the room, but were in the same department or on the same floor. They are considered only when no badge at the dispenser can take the credit.
The rules that decide the credit
The panel states the rule in a sentence after the Opportunities open at list. The rules are:
| Rule | What happened |
|---|---|
| Strongest signal | The badge with the strongest signal among those still in contention was credited. |
| Strongest signal after setting aside fully compliant badges | Badges whose opportunity already had both washes were set aside, then the strongest remaining signal was credited. |
| Shared in turn | Several badges were in contention, so the credit was shared out in turn: lead room first, then the badge with the fewest washes, then the stronger signal. |
| Nearest in the department | Every badge at the dispenser was already fully compliant or had no open opportunity, so a badge in the department with an open opportunity was credited: the one with the fewest washes first, then the one closest in time to the dispense. |
| Nearest on the floor | Every badge at the dispenser was already fully compliant or had no open opportunity, so the nearest badge on the floor was credited. |
| Badge the dispenser reported | No other choice was possible, so the badge the dispenser itself reported was credited. |
| Not credited | Every badge heard was below the signal threshold, so nobody was credited. |
For how the distribution modes differ, see About the Dispenses Distribution Algorithm.
If the panel shows No attribution has been recorded for this dispense yet., Hand Hygiene has not decided the credit for that dispense. If it shows that seeing attributions needs the Hand Hygiene View permission, ask your administrator for access.
Limits
Test Mode reads live detections, so a busy window can hold more records than it can draw. When that happens it says so — the timeline shows the earliest records and warns that more matched than could be loaded. Narrow the time range to see the rest.
All in this time period looks for dispensers in up to 5000 dispenses. When the window holds more, Test Mode shows This window holds more than 5000 dispenses — only the first 5000 were scanned for dispensers. Dispensers used only after that point aren't added. Narrow the time range, or add those dispensers with the Add Dispensers selector.
