Use Test Mode to confirm a new deployment records what you expect, and to work out why a specific opportunity scored the way it did. Each procedure in this article follows the same shape: pick a time range, pick the badges, add the dispensers, and read the two timelines against each other.
Before you begin
Before you start, make sure the following are complete:
- You have the Hand Hygiene Administrator role. Test Mode is at Settings > Test Mode.
- The staff you want to check have badges assigned. See Provision a badge to staff.
- You know roughly when the activity happened. Test Mode covers the last hour, the last 8 or 24 hours, or today.
- You have read About Test Mode, which explains the timelines and what each state means.
Confirm a new deployment is recording
Do this after installing Dispenser Beacons in a unit, with someone walking the floor.
- Open Settings > Test Mode.
- Select Last hour.
- Select Badges, then choose the badge of the person who walked the floor.
- Read the Badges header. It should report at least one opportunity for the rooms they entered.
- For the Dispensers timeline, select All in this time period.
- Read the Dispensers header. Each dispenser they used should appear with its dispenses.
- Turn on Show dispenses and confirm the dispenses line up with the opportunity blocks.
If the Badges timeline shows no opportunities, the rooms are not producing visits — check room matching. If opportunities appear but no dispenses do, the Dispenser Beacons are not reporting.
Verify a configuration change
Do this after changing minimum visit duration, or either wash window.
- Open Settings > Test Mode.
- Check the configuration summary. It shows the live values — confirm your change is there before going further.
- Select a time range that covers activity after the change.
- Select the badges of people who worked in that window.
- Point at an opportunity block and read its account of what happened.
A wash that now falls inside a widened window reads as credited; one that falls outside still reads as missed. The configuration summary and the opportunity account together tell you whether the new values behave as you intended.
Investigate an opportunity that scored lower than expected
Do this when someone reports they washed but were not credited.
- Open Settings > Test Mode.
- Select the time range covering the shift in question.
- Select Badges and choose that person's badge.
- Find the opportunity on their row. A half-filled block scored 50%; an empty one scored 0%.
- Point at the block. Read when they entered and exited, and the account of the wash.
- Select Used by selected badges to add the dispensers they actually triggered.
- Turn on Show dispenses and compare the dispense times against the entry and exit times.
Most cases resolve to one of these:
| What you see | What it means |
|---|---|
| A dispense a few seconds outside the window | The wash happened, but not within the configured wash-in or wash-out window |
| No wash credited before entering | No dispense was detected in the wash-in window |
| A dispense marked no badge credited | The dispenser recorded a dispense, but no badge was close enough to credit |
| A dispense marked Outside any opportunity | The wash did not belong to any room visit, so it does not affect compliance |
| The visit is not there at all | The visit was shorter than the minimum visit duration, so no opportunity was created |
See why a dispense was credited to someone else
Do this when a person used a dispenser but the wash counted for a colleague, or for nobody.
- Open Settings > Test Mode.
- Select the time range covering the dispense.
- Select Badges and choose the badge of the person who used the dispenser. Add the colleague's badge too, if you know who it was.
- Select Used by selected badges to add the dispensers they used.
- Turn on Advanced diagnostics.
- On the Dispensers timeline, select the dispense. If it is part of a group, select the group, then select the dispense in the Advanced Diagnostic panel.
- In the dispense record, check who it was credited to. · not selected means the credit went to someone whose badge you have not selected.
- Under Opportunities open at, check whether the staff member had an opportunity open at the moment of the dispense. Then read the sentence after the list that names the rule that decided the credit.
- Under Badge scan breakdown, compare the signal strength of each badge the dispenser heard, and read why a badge was set aside, if it was.
Most cases resolve to one of these:
| What you see | What it means |
|---|---|
| The person is marked below signal threshold or too far below strongest | Their badge's signal was too weak, or much weaker than another badge's, so it was not considered. |
| The person is marked already fully compliant | Their opportunity already had both washes, so the credit went to someone who still needed one. |
| The person is marked no open opportunity | The dispense fell outside every wash window of theirs, so it couldn't count for them. |
| The staff member isn't in Badge scan breakdown or Inherited badges | The dispenser didn't hear their badge, and they were not in the room with a badge it did hear. |
| No attribution has been recorded for this dispense yet. | Hand Hygiene hasn't decided the credit yet. Wait a few minutes and select the dispense again. |
To clear the panel, select its close icon (Close details), or turn off Advanced diagnostics to go back to viewing details by pointing at the timelines.
Investigate a missing dispense
Do this when a dispenser appears not to be recording.
- Open Settings > Test Mode.
- Select Last hour.
- Select at least one badge — the Dispensers timeline appears only once badges are selected.
- Select Add Dispensers and choose the dispenser in question.
- Trigger the physical dispenser a few times.
- Reload the page and check the dispenses appear on that dispenser's row.
If nothing appears, the Dispenser Beacon is not reporting. Check it in Dispensers Telemetry.
Note: Add Dispensers lists every Hand Hygiene dispenser under All Dispensers, whether or not it had activity. If the dispenser isn't there, it isn't set up as a Hand Hygiene dispenser. Check Settings > Dispensers.
Verify a newly installed Dispenser Beacon
- Open Settings > Test Mode and select Last hour.
- Select any badge, so the Dispensers timeline is shown.
- Select Add Dispensers and choose the newly installed dispenser.
- Trigger it several times at the unit.
- Confirm each activation appears on the timeline within seconds.
A dispense with no badge credited still confirms the Dispenser Beacon works. It means the badges the dispenser heard were too far away to credit. Walk up wearing a badge and trigger it again to confirm attribution too.
Result
You can tell which of the three layers is at fault: room matching (no opportunity), the Dispenser Beacon (no dispense), or the configuration (a dispense that fell outside a window). Fix the layer the timeline points at, then repeat the check in a new window to confirm.
If a window is too busy
Test Mode warns when a window holds more records than it can draw, and shows the earliest ones. Narrow the time range and check again. The same applies when several dispenses fall too close together to separate — the timeline groups them and shows the count.
