Once your Kontakt.io devices are deployed, keeping their firmware up to date is an important part of managing them. A firmware release typically includes improvements, fixes, and new features.
Firmware upgrade methods
The upgrade method depends on your infrastructure. If you have integrated Kontakt.io devices with Cisco Spaces, device firmware updates are managed from Cisco Spaces.
| Method | Infrastructure requirement | How it works |
|---|---|---|
| Scheduled over-the-air (OTA) upgrade (see Schedule firmware upgrades with Managed Firmware Upgrades) | Portal Lights | Firmware upgrades are scheduled from Kio Cloud Device Management. Scheduled upgrades move devices to the next available firmware version; you may need to schedule multiple upgrades until devices reach the latest version. Portal Lights receive scheduled upgrades from Kio Cloud over their local Wi-Fi connection. BLE-only Infrastructure and Tag devices receive scheduled upgrades from a nearby Portal Light. |
| Onsite local firmware upgrade (see Local firmware upgrades with the Kio Setup Manager app) | iOS or Android mobile device with the Kio Setup Manager mobile app | Firmware upgrades are applied at the device using the Kio Setup Manager app. Devices download the next available firmware version from Kio Cloud over your mobile device's Wi-Fi connection. In the app, you select a device within range and select its firmware upgrade option. If multiple firmware versions are available, apply each one in turn until the device reaches the latest version. |
| SDK firmware upgrade | Mobile app integrated with the Kontakt.io mobile SDKs | See the iOS SDK and Android SDK documentation. |
Note: The Kontakt.io Nano Tag and Sticker Tag can't receive firmware updates. They're non-connectable devices — their firmware is set when the order is manufactured and shipped, and can't be changed in the field.
About firmware versioning
Firmware versions are numbered in sequence, and the highest number is the latest version. To reach the latest version, a device sometimes needs more than one upgrade in a row. For example, if the latest version is 2.0 and a device is at 1.0, you may first upgrade it to 1.3 and then to 2.0.
To learn more about released firmware versions, see Device firmware releases.
Check devices for available firmware upgrades
You can check if your Kontakt.io devices have an available firmware upgrade from Kio Cloud Device Management and locally onsite with the Kio Setup Manager app.
How to check for available firmware upgrades from Device Management
From Kio Cloud, go to Device Management.
From the Inventory menu, select the device category, either Tags or Infrastructure.
To filter devices by firmware version, select Add Criteria, then select Firmware.
-
The Firmware filter list shows the device count for each firmware version. Select a firmware version.
In the list, find the Available Firmware Upgrade column. A black upgrade icon appears next to each device that has an upgrade available. To see the upgrade details, point to the icon.
How to check for available firmware upgrades from the Kio Setup Manager app
If you're near your Kontakt.io devices, use the Kio Setup Manager app to check for firmware updates. The app shows a visual indicator next to each device that has an update available.
From your mobile device, open the Kio Setup Manager app and sign in.
From the top menu bar, tap My Devices.
In the list of devices, look for the visual indicator that identifies an available firmware update.
Blue arrow up icon indicates a firmware update is available.
Orange sync icon indicates the device has a pending Kio Cloud configuration update.
