After adding staff to Staff Safe, they must be assigned to their Kontakt.io Smart Badge — a process also known as provisioning a badge (or badge distribution). Once assigned, staff can activate an alert from their badge. This enables responders to intervene, de-escalate situations, and provide assistance when it matters most.
Before you begin, make sure the following are complete:
You are assigned the Staff Safe Administrator or User role. Roles are assigned in the Kio Cloud Users app by a User Management Administrator, or through your organization's SSO identity provider.
The staff member exists in Staff Safe. See Add staff.
You have the Smart Badge in hand. Its 12-character MAC address and Unique ID are printed on the badge holder, on the non-button side.
The badge is powered on. See Power on or verify a Smart Badge 3 is powered on or Power on or verify a Smart Badge 3 Mini is powered on.
The staff member is covered by an Alert Rule. Without one, a badge press activates no alert.
Note: Depending on your organization's button-press configuration, handling a badge that is already assigned to staff and covered by an Alert Rule can activate an alert.
Steps
From your Kontakt.io Launchpad, select Staff Safe.
From the Settings menu, select Staff.
Locate the staff member in the list.
-
Select their Staff ID or Name.
Their profile opens.
From the upper-right corner, select Edit.
In the Assigned Tag section, search for the badge's 12-character MAC address or Unique ID, then select the badge.
Verify the MAC address or Unique ID matches the badge in your hand.
Select Save.
The badge is assigned and the staff member can activate an alert from it.
Verify the assignment
Kontakt.io recommends confirming the badge works before you hand it over.
-
Activate a test alert from the badge.
By factory default this is three button presses in quick succession, though your organization may have configured a different count or button.
Resolve the alert, set its Resolution Code to Test, and add a note recording that you were testing badge assignment and operation.
If no alert was activated, confirm the staff member is covered by an Alert Rule and that the rule's button event — blue, red, or any button — matches the button you pressed.
If the staff member is new to Staff Safe, share Guide to activate a staff duress alert with them — it includes a Quick Start Guide and an explainer video.
You can also assign a badge from the Kio Entity Manager mobile app.
