To enable a staff member to activate a duress alert, their Kontakt.io Smart Badge must be assigned to them. This process—also known as provisioning a badge—links the staff member's staff ID within Staff Safe to their badge. The Kio Entity Manager mobile app makes that assignment where the badges are, so you can scan and hand out badges in one pass instead of returning to a workstation.
Before you begin, make sure the following are complete:
You are assigned the Entity Manager Mobile User role.
The staff member exists in Staff Safe and you have their Staff ID (Entity ID). See Add staff. The app can also scan a barcode containing the Staff ID.
-
The Kio Entity Manager app is installed on your mobile device. Go to the App Store or Google Play and search for Kio Entity Manager.
Requirements: iPhone or iPad on iOS 17 or later, or an Android phone or tablet on version 8 or later | Bluetooth on | an internet connection.
The badge is powered on. See Power on or verify a Smart Badge 3 is powered on or Power on or verify a Smart Badge 3 Mini is powered on.
Note: Depending on your organization's button-press configuration, handling a badge that is already assigned to staff and covered by an Alert Rule can activate an alert.
Steps
From your mobile device, open the Kio Entity Manager app.
-
From Region, select the location of your organization's Kontakt.io account.
United States covers North America and Japan-Asia Pacific. United Kingdom covers the UK, EU, and other European countries. Do not select Other unless Kontakt.io directs you to.
-
Sign in with your user credentials.
Use the same method you use in a web browser — single sign-on if your account is integrated with your organization's SSO provider, otherwise your email and password.
From Select actions, tap Assign Badge to Staff.
-
Scan the QR code on the Kontakt.io Smart Badge.
-
Scan the barcode containing the staff member's Staff ID, or tap Enter Staff ID and enter it.
-
Review the assignment Summary, and update the Device Note if needed.
The note is stored in the tag's profile in Device Management. Assigning a badge here also sets the badge's Deployment Status in Device Management to Deployed automatically — you don't need to set it yourself.
-
Confirm the assignment.
A Success confirmation appears and you can continue assigning badges to other staff.
The badge is assigned and the staff member can activate an alert from it.
Verify the assignment
Kontakt.io recommends confirming the badge works before you hand it over.
-
Activate a test alert from the badge.
By factory default this is three button presses in quick succession, though your organization may have configured a different count or button.
Resolve the alert, set its Resolution Code to Test, and add a note recording that you were testing badge assignment and operation.
If no alert was activated, confirm the staff member is covered by an Alert Rule and that the rule's button event — blue, red, or any button — matches the button you pressed.
If the staff member is new to Staff Safe, share Guide to activate a staff duress alert with them — it includes a Quick Start Guide and an explainer video.
