Kontakt.io firmware releases for Infrastructure and Tag devices can add capabilities, improve performance, and resolve issues. Your organization must initiate or schedule firmware updates because devices do not update automatically. Review the current firmware versions and model-specific release notes when planning firmware updates.
Why keep firmware current
Keep devices updated to the current firmware version whenever possible. Current firmware includes the latest improvements and fixes that support continued device stability and reliability. This guidance applies to all Kontakt.io devices that support firmware updates, including network-connected Infrastructure devices and BLE-only devices.
Firmware updates can require a sequential upgrade path. If a device is several versions behind, it may need to install one or more intermediate versions before it can install the current version. Each required version must be installed in order.
Regular updates reduce the number of required upgrade steps and the time needed to reach the current version. Allowing devices to fall significantly behind can increase maintenance time, make future updates more complex, and leave devices operating without improvements and fixes included in later releases.
Who manages firmware updates
Firmware updates are commonly managed by those who oversee and manage your organization's Kontakt.io device inventory. To manage firmware updates, they must be assigned a Device Management role that allows them to schedule upgrades, such as Administrator or Firmware Manager. See About user access to Device Management.
How to view devices with an available firmware upgrade
- From the Kontakt.io Launchpad, select Device Management.
- From the Inventory menu, select the device category: Tags or Infrastructure.
- Find the Available Firmware Upgrade column. A black upgrade icon appears next to each device with an available upgrade. To view the upgrade details, point to the icon.
How devices receive firmware updates
How a device receives firmware updates depends on your gateway infrastructure:
- Portal Light infrastructure: Schedule firmware updates from Kio Cloud Device Management. See About Managed Firmware Upgrades.
- Without Portal Light infrastructure: Apply firmware updates locally at the device with the Kio Setup Manager app or through the Kontakt.io mobile SDKs.
- Cisco Spaces integration: Manage Kontakt.io device firmware updates from Cisco Spaces.

How the release notes are organized
Current firmware versions lists the current version for every model.
The release notes follow the device categories used in Device Management:
- Infrastructure: Stationary devices assigned to an installation location. See Portal Light firmware releases, Beam firmware releases, Anchor Beacon firmware releases, and Dispenser Beacon firmware releases. Temp Monitor firmware releases will be published when the first release notes become available.
- Tags: Devices attached to an asset or worn by a person. See Asset Tag firmware releases, Puck Beacon firmware releases, and Smart Badge firmware releases.
The Nano Tag, Nano Tag IR, and Sticker Tag do not have release notes. These non-connectable devices that ship from Kontakt.io with the current firmware version and cannot be updated.
