These instructions provide the steps to get a handful to hundreds of Portal Lights ready for use. The Portal Lights are configured with the facility's WiFi network settings, and once configured they are ready to be installed with Kio Setup Manager app.
When the following steps are complete, a Portal Light scans for Kontakt.io BLE beacons and devices and sends data to and downloads settings from Kio Cloud over its connection to the facility's local WiFi network.
-
Your Kio Cloud username (email) and password.
-
Kio Cloud Smart Location setup is complete.
-
Portal Light network requirements are met.
-
Mobile WiFi Hotspot (recommended) or WiFi Access Point with administrator permissions.
-
WiFi network settings the Portal Lights will connect to at their install locations.
Not required If Kontakt.io pre-configured the Portal Lights WiFi network settings; requested when an order is placed.
-
Portal Light Install locations - meet the Portal Light placement guidelines.
Important
Deploying both Portal Lights and Portal Beams? First, configure and install each Portal Light and then the Portal Beams.
During installation, the app is required and walks you through the setup and installation steps. If you already have the app, be sure you have the latest version.
To download the app, go to the App Store or Google Play. Search for Kio Setup Manager.
App requirements: Apple iPhone or iPad: iOS version 11 or later | Android phone or tablet: version 5.0 or later | Bluetooth enabled (on) | Internet connection

If Kontakt.io pre-configured the Portal Light's WIFi network settings, go to the next step.
-
Power on each Portal Light (daisy chain or use of the Portal Light passthrough outlet is recommended).
-
First, you'll configure your WiFi Hotspot or Access Point with the default Kontakt.io network. This step provides the network connection required to allow the Portal Light to download its local WiFi network settings from Kio Cloud.
Add the below Kontakt.io network to your mobile WiFi hotspot or Access Point.
SSID: kontaktDeployment
Password: LTPGjjwp256
Network security: WPA, WPA2-PSK, WEP
WiFi Frequency: 2.4 GHz
Important
If a Portal Light LED status indicator remains RED, this indicates it could not connect to the kontaktDeployment network. Please verify the settings are correct and that it's set to a 2.4 GHz network.
-
Sign in to Kio Cloud > select Device Management > select Gateways.
-
From the list, select each Portal Light > select Bulk Edit.
-
Enter the facility's local WiFi network settings (network the Portal Lights will connect to at their install locations) > select Save. This network is commonly referred to as the custom network.
-
Network Authentication: Personal (WPA; TKIP & AES), Enterprise (WPA2; TKIP & AES), Open WiFi (WEP; Open &Shared)
-
Network Name: SSID; case sensitive
-
Network Password: passphrase (network password); case sensitive
-
Alias: for information purposes only
-
-
Wait for up to 5 minutes.
Each Portal Light synchronizes with Kio Cloud to download the local (custom) WiFi network settings.
A Portal Light's LED indicator blinks Blue > Green > Blue > and ends with solid GREEN when it successfully connects to the local WiFi network.
If after 5 minutes its RED LED indicator is blinking, this indicates it failed to connect to the network. From Kio Cloud, verify its WiFi network settings are correct.
If the settings are correct, verify the Portal Light network requirements are met to allow its connection to Kio Cloud and an NTP time source. Its LED status indicator may also provide insight into the issue.
Now that each Portal Light is connected to the local WiFi network, they're ready to be installed.
Important
This step must be completed at the Portal Light install location.
-
Power on the Portal Light - plug into a standard grounded outlet.
-
From your mobile device, open the Kio Setup Manager app
> sign in with your Kio Cloud username (email address) and password.
-
Tap Install devices > tap Portal Light Bulk Setup > and bring your mobile device close to the Portal Light.
When the app detects the Portal Light, the app guides you through the steps.
-
Verify the Portal Light LED is a solid green, which indicates it's connected to the local WiFi network.
If its LED remains RED, it could not connect to the local WiFi network. From Kio Cloud, verify its network settings are correct.
You can also refer to the Portal Light LED indicators.
During this final install step, you'll place a Portal Light at its exact mounting location within its Smart Location room.
-
Sign in to Kio Cloud (https://app.cloud.us.kontakt.io/signin) > from the launchpad, select Smart Location.
-
Go to the Campus, Building, and Floor where Portal Light is installed and assigned to > from the upper-right corner, select CONFIGURE FLOOR > select the Devices tab.
