IR mode configures the Beam Mini to broadcast a room number via infrared. Smart Badges worn by staff receive the infrared signal and include the room number in their location telemetry — allowing the system to determine which room a badge is in based on IR signal, rather than BLE proximity alone.
The operation mode is set at installation and cannot be changed without re-running the installation workflow.
Before you begin
- Signed in to Kio Setup Manager mobile app with the Device Management role
- Beam Mini order is claimed in Device Management
- Smart Location is complete — campus, building, floor, and room are created for the install location
- A Portal Light is installed and online at this location — the Beam Mini relies on it to reach Kio Cloud
- Beam Mini is physically mounted so its IR emitter has line of sight across the room
- Smart Badges are deployed and active in the space — IR signal reception requires a badge to be present during testing
Steps
- Tap Install in the bottom navigation bar.
- Select Portal Beam.
- Select the device model: Beam Mini or Beam Mini 2.
- Select IR mode.
- Scan the QR code on the Beam Mini label by tapping Scan device, or tap Enter ID manually and type the Unique ID.
- Enter the IR room number — this is the numeric identifier the Beam Mini broadcasts via infrared. Use a number that maps to the room in your deployment plan.
- Enter the IR blink interval — how often (in seconds) the Beam Mini emits the IR signal.
- Kio Setup Manager sends the IR configuration to the Beam Mini and to Kio Cloud. Wait for the confirmation message.
- Select the campus, building, floor, and room from the Smart Location hierarchy. Tap Next to confirm each level.
- Tap Confirm location to assign the device.
- Tap Complete when the success screen appears.
What happens next
The Beam Mini begins broadcasting the configured room number via infrared. Smart Badges in the space receive the signal and include the room number in their telemetry reports.
After installation, run Test IR from the device's action menu with a Smart Badge present in the space to verify the signal is being received correctly.
The IR room number is visible in the Beam Mini's device detail view telemetry when it is within Bluetooth range.
