Alert Rules provide a method to get notified for various device conditions that commonly require attention. These conditions include instances where Portal Lights are offline resulting in data not being received by Kio Cloud, situations where Kio Cloud has not received data from your Tags or Room Sensors, and low device battery levels.
This article explains how to create and manage Alert Rules. It covers the available types of alerts, essential information to consider when creating a new rule, and instructions for enabling or disabling a rule. It's important to note that managing Alert Rules is restricted to users assigned to the Administrator Role in Device Health.

When creating an Alert Rule, you will need to select an alert type.
The below table provides a brief description of each alert type and the condition being monitored.
Alert Type |
Description |
Condition options When the condition is reached, an alert is activated... |
---|---|---|
Portal Light Offline |
Monitors and keeps track of Portal Lights' connection to Kio Cloud to ensure they are connecting to the local WiFi network and sending data to Kio Cloud without issues. This alert is crucial for ensuring the seamless and uninterrupted flow of data between a Portal Light and Kio Cloud, which also includes the data being received from tags and room sensors that are within range of a Portal Light. The cause of an Offline status is commonly network or power related or that there were no tags or room sensors within range of the Portal Light that resulted in no data being received by Kio Cloud. |
When any Portal Light is Offline for a specified amount of time When a specified quantity of Portal Lights are Offline When a specified percentage of Portal Lights are Offline |
Last Seen |
Monitors and keeps tracks of devices' Last Seen timestamp. Last Seen timestamp identifies when data for a device was last received by Kio Cloud. This alert type is useful for keeping track of devices' statuses and ensuring that their data is being received by Kio Cloud regularly. |
When a device has not been seen for a specified amount of time |
Low Battery |
Monitors the battery levels of battery-powered tags and infrastructure devices. This alert is useful when you want to know when devices' battery life remaining is getting low - allowing a proactive task to schedule a battery or device replacement. |
When any device has a battery level that falls below a certain percentage When a specified quantity of devices have a battery level that falls below a certain percentage |
Before you begin, there are a few things you'll need to know to configure an Alert Rule.
-
What type of alert - Portal Light Offline, Low Battery Level, Last Seen? What are the conditions?
-
Do you want alerts for all devices or specific models?
-
Do you want the alert to apply to all locations, a specific campus and its buildings, or a specific building?
-
Who should receive alert notifications? And how do they need to be notified, via email or text, or both?
-
Do you want a reminder notifications to be sent if the alert has not been resolved in a specified amount of time?
-
From the Kio Cloud Launchpad, select Device Health.
-
From the Settings menu, select Alert Rules.
-
Select CREATE ALERT RULE > select the type of alert. You are guided through each configuration step.
-
General: set the name to uniquely identity the rule and its severity level.
Activate Alert Rule after saving: By default, this option is selected and rule is set to a status of enabled to actively monitor the condition. To disable the alert, deselect Activate Alert Rule after saving. You can always enable the alert at a later time.
-
Applies to: set the devices the alert will monitor.
-
Locations: set the device locations the alert will monitor.
-
Actions: set how and who is notified when an alert is activated (triggered).
For those mission critical devices, you have the option to set up reminder notifications in the event that an alert is not advanced to resolved within a designated window of time.

Example: edit an Alert Rule
When an Alert Rule is enabled, alerts are activated when the condition set in the rule is reached.
You can disable an Alert Rule when you do not want alerts to be triggered. This is helpful during short-term conditions, such as during a system deployment and not all of the infrastructure devices are operational and online. Or if there a planned Wi-Fi network outage and you do not want alerts sent during the outage time period.
