In addition to guided installation workflows, the Kio Setup Manager mobile app provides troubleshooting tools for the Portal Beam and Beam Mini. The Portal Beam supports both IR testing and thermal camera tools, while the Beam Mini supports only IR testing.
Topics include:
The Kio Setup Manager Test IR tool checks whether a Portal Beam or Beam Mini is correctly transmitting room-level location data through infrared (IR) and whether Tags (Asset Tag, Smart Badge) located in the Beam room install location can receive it.
-
Verify that a Portal Beam or Beam Mini (the IR emitter) is broadcasting the correct room number.
-
Confirm that Tags or Badges (the IR readers) are receiving IR signals.
-
Troubleshoot IR room-level location issues.
-
Validate Beam IR coverage during installation or relocation.
-
IR emitters (broadcasts room number via IR): Portal Beam, Beam Mini
-
IR receiver (reads IR room number via IR): Asset Tag 2, Asset Tag 2 Mini, Nano Tag IR, Smart Badge, Smart Badge 3
You can access the Test IR tool from:
-
Tools menu (quick access)
-
Device details screen for a Portal Beam or Beam Mini
-
Tap Tools > Beam Troubleshooting > Test IR.
Alternatively, tap Devices, select the Beam, then tap Test IR.
-
Scan the Beam's QR code or enter its 12-character MAC address.
If the Portal Beam is mounted its QR code is not visible. You can get its QR code from its profile in Device Management > Infrastructure menu.
-
Scan the QR code of a Tag or Badge located in the room.
-
The app displays steps such as Looking for device and Waiting for IR signal.
-
If successful, you’ll see the message: IR Test finished successfully.
-
If the test succeeds, the Beam is broadcasting correctly, and the Tag or Badge is receiving IR room location data.
Tip
Repeat the test with Tags or Badges in different parts of the room (for example, each corner) to confirm consistent IR coverage.
-
If the test fails:
Make sure the Beam is powered on and installed properly
Ensure the Tag or Badge is within range of the Beam (in the same room)
Check that the Tag or Badge is supported and powered on

The Verify Thermal Camera tool in Kio Setup Manager lets you capture and review a Portal Beam’s thermal image. You can use this to validate real-time occupancy detection and configure Exclusion Zones.
-
Verify real-time occupancy (people detected).
-
Verify and configure Exclusion Zones.
Exclusion Zones are user-defined areas within a Portal Beam's field of view that are ignored by the Kontakt.io Occupancy Engine. These zones can include non-human, stationary objects with high background temperatures, such as TVs, light fixtures, windows, or other electrical equipment. Additionally, an exclusion zone can be a specific area within a large room where occupancy detection is not required. Exclusion Zones can only be managed from the Kio Setup Manager mobile app.
-
Tap Tools > Beam Troubleshooting > Verify Thermal Camera.
Alternatively, tap Devices > locate and select the Portal Beam, then tap Verify Thermal Camera.
-
Scan the QR code printed on the Portal Beam or enter its MAC address.
If the Portal Beam is mounted its QR code is not visible. You can get its QR code from its profile in Device Management > Infrastructure menu.
-
Tap Capture Image to get the real-time thermal image.
-
Use the toggle options to show or hide recognition boxes (detected people) and exclusion zones.
If there are any non-human, stationary hot objects detected or areas you want to exclude from occupancy detection, you can configure these as Exclusion Zones. It's recommended to set windows within the room as exclusion zones, especially when there is direct sunlight into the room.
-
Additional options include:
Upload (cloud icon): sends the thermal image to the cloud—available within the Portal Beam's profile in Device Management.
Share: email the captured image.
Configure Zones: add or update exclusion zones directly from the image.
Tap Add Exclusion Zone to place a new red rectangle.
Move, resize, or delete zones (with the X button).
Tap Next to save and upload the updated thermal image.
The Recalibrate Thermal Camera tool in Kio Setup Manager resets the calibration of a Portal Beam’s thermal camera. This ensures the device adjusts to its environment and provides accurate occupancy detection.
-
After relocating a Portal Beam to a new position or room.
-
When the environment has changed significantly, such as furniture being rearranged.
-
To correct thermal drift if accuracy decreases over time.
-
Calibration should only be completed after the Portal Beam has been installed for at least two hours. This allows the sensors to adjust to the room temperature.
-
If recalibrating outside the install location, use a room with similar temperature.
-
Keep the Beam’s camera covered with your finger during the process.
-
The app provides on-screen guidance with helpful illustrations.
-
Tap Tools > Beam Troubleshooting > Recalibrate Thermal Camera.
-
Scan the QR code printed on the Portal Beam or enter its MAC address.
If the Portal Beam is mounted its QR code is not visible. You can get its QR code from its profile in Device Management > Infrastructure menu.
-
Follow the on-screen instructions to complete the calibration.
-
Watch the progress bar as calibration runs.
-
When complete, you’ll see one of two screens:
Success – Calibration finished
Failure – Retry option available
