A Storage Unit is a temperature-controlled unit whose internal conditions you monitor: a medication refrigerator, a vaccine freezer, an ultra-low freezer, a warmer, or any other enclosed storage. In Temperature Monitoring, the Storage Unit is the record that a Monitor measures and that a Threshold Setting and Alert Rule act on.
The unit belongs to your facility. Temperature Monitoring works with the refrigerators and freezers you already have. You create a Storage Unit record for each one you want to monitor.
Where Storage Units fit
A Storage Unit connects several pieces of the system:
- It is assigned to a room in Smart Location, which places it in a campus, building, floor, and department.
- It is given a Storage Unit Type, which categorizes it for filtering and reporting.
- It receives a Threshold Setting, which defines its acceptable range.
- A Monitor is installed and assigned to it to take readings.
- It is included in an Alert Rule so its excursions notify someone.
A Storage Unit must exist before a Monitor can be assigned to it during installation. Creating Storage Units is therefore one of the first steps in setting up Temperature Monitoring, before any Monitor is installed.
Where Storage Units are created
You can create and manage Storage Units in two places, and they are the same records in both:
- Kio Cloud Company Settings, under Entity Management, where a Storage Unit is an Entity and a Storage Unit Type is an Entity Type. Kontakt.io recommends Company Settings for first-time setup and for organizations that use several Kio Solution apps.
- Temperature Monitoring, under Settings, for day-to-day management once the app is in use.
Some Storage Unit Type details (the icon, the color, and the Status Group and Status Value definitions) are managed only from the Entity Type in Company Settings.
What you see as setup progresses
A new Storage Unit moves through a sequence of statuses as you complete its setup:
- After it is created, it shows Threshold setup required until a Threshold Setting is assigned.
- After a threshold is assigned, it shows Monitor setup required until a Monitor is installed.
- After a Monitor is installed, it begins reporting and shows Online when readings are within threshold.
- If it is still not in any Alert Rule, it shows Alert setup required so you know excursions will not alert anyone yet.
