This release introduces Groups in the Users app and Escalation Alert Rules. Escalation Alert Rules are available in the Temperature Monitoring, Asset Tracker, and Device Health apps. These features make it easier to manage user access and automatically notify the appropriate team when an alert requires additional attention.
Groups
Manage access with Groups
The Users app now includes a Groups page for managing user access.
Users assigned the User Management Administrator role can:
- Create Groups
- Assign roles and campus access to each Group
- Add or remove Group members
All Group members inherit the assigned roles and campus access, making it easier to manage access for teams instead of individual users. Groups created directly in Kio Cloud are identified as Managed Groups and can be edited at any time.
Existing user-level role assignments continue to apply until you choose to migrate users to Group Access.
View identity provider Groups
For organizations that use single sign-on (SSO), the Groups page provides a centralized view of Groups synchronized from your identity provider.
From one location, User Management Administrators can view:
- Group membership
- Assigned roles
- Campus access
Group membership continues to be managed through your identity provider.
Escalation Alert Rules
Available in Temperature Monitoring, Asset Tracker, and Device Health apps.
Escalate alerts to another team
Alert Rules now support Escalations, allowing alerts to be automatically routed to another team if they are not acknowledged or resolved within a specified time.
Escalations are configured directly from an Alert Rule. You can add one or more escalation levels. For each escalation level, define:
- When the alert should escalate.
- Which Escalation Alert Rule to use.
An Escalation Alert Rule defines:
- The Group whose members can acknowledge and resolve escalation alerts.
- The notification actions used when the escalation is triggered.
The same Escalation Alert Rule can be reused across multiple Alert Rules, and each Alert Rule can include multiple escalation levels. This allows different teams to be notified as an incident progresses.
Review the Escalation Chain
When an alert reaches an escalation level, Kio Cloud creates a new escalation alert linked to the original alert.
The Escalation Chain displays the original alert and each related escalation in a single view, making it easy to review:
- When each escalation occurred.
- Which teams were notified.
- Which team acknowledged or resolved each escalation.
How User Groups and Escalation Alert Rules work together
Groups (Users app), Escalation Alert Rules, and Alert Rules each have a specific responsibility.
| Component | Purpose |
|---|---|
| Groups | Define Group members, role access, and campus access. For Escalation Alert Rules, who can acknowledge or resolve escalation alerts. |
| Escalation Alert Rules | Define the Group assigned to an escalation and the notification actions used when that escalation occurs. |
| Alert Rules | Define when an alert escalates and which Escalation Alert Rule is used for each escalation level. |
In practice:
- Groups define who can respond to escalation alerts.
- Escalation Alert Rules define how those users are notified.
- Alert Rules define when an alert escalates and which Escalation Alert Rule is used.
What to do
Configure Groups
The User Management Administrator role is required to create and manage Groups.
If your organization manages users directly in Kio Cloud:
- Open the Users app.
- Create one or more Groups.
- Assign roles and campus access to each Group.
- Add Group members.
Existing user-level role assignments continue to apply until you choose to migrate users to Group Access.
If your organization uses SSO, no action is required. Identity provider Groups automatically appear in the Groups page. Continue managing Group membership through your identity provider.
Configure Escalation Alert Rules
Before adding an Escalation to an Alert Rule, make sure at least one Group exists.
- Create a Group in the Users app, or verify that at least one Group is synchronized from your identity provider.
- Create an Escalation Alert Rule.
- Select the Group whose members can acknowledge and resolve escalation alerts.
- Configure the notification actions.
- Open an existing Alert Rule in Temperature Monitoring, Asset Tracker, or Device Health.
- Add one or more escalation levels.
- Define when each escalation should occur and select the appropriate Escalation Alert Rule.
Existing Alert Rules continue to operate normally until you add an Escalation.
Respond to escalation alerts
When an escalation is triggered. a new escalation alert is activated. Members of the Group assigned to the Escalation Alert Rule can acknowledge and resolve the escalation alert.
