Hand Hygiene has three report types: Compliance Report, Dispenser Activations, and Low Soap Dispensers. The type you choose sets what the report measures, which entities it can cover, and whether it uses a time range. This article describes each type in full. For how to generate one, see Generate a one-time report and Create a recurring or on-demand report.
Report type and entity type
Each report type works with a specific set of entity types. Use this matrix to know which combinations are valid before you start.
| Report type | Staff | Locations | Dispensers |
|---|---|---|---|
| Compliance Report | Yes | Yes | — |
| Dispenser Activations | — | Yes | Yes |
| Low Soap Dispensers | — | Yes (only) | — |
Note: The Nurse Manager role has access to the Compliance Report and Dispenser Activations types only. Low Soap Dispensers does not appear for that role.
Compliance Report
What it provides. Hand hygiene compliance for the staff or locations you select, over a time range. The report opens with a summary — Overall Compliance Rate, Fully Compliant Opportunities, and total Hand Sanitization Opportunities — followed by a table that breaks the same figures down by campus, or by department when the report covers departments.
When the report covers specific staff members, the table lists one row per staff member instead, under location headings (campus / building / floor). Each row shows External ID (Name), Department, Compliance Rate, Fully Compliant, and Opportunities. A selected staff member with no data in the time range shows No compliance data for this staff member.
The Overall Compliance Rate is the average opportunity score: each opportunity scores 100% when both the wash-in and the wash-out happen, 50% for one, and 0% for neither. It's the same calculation as Overall Compliance on the Compliance Analytics page. For the deeper interactive breakdowns by role, day of week, and hour, use the Compliance Analytics page in the web app. See View Compliance Analytics.
Why it matters. The Compliance Report is the always-on record for infection prevention and for regulatory and accreditation review. Hand hygiene is governed by The Joint Commission (IC.02.01.01 EP 2 and NPSG.07.01.01); since 2018, a single observed failure during direct care is citable. It also maps to the CDC Core Components and the WHO Five Moments. Continuous monitoring covers far more activity than episodic manual direct observation can: the WHO targets roughly 200 observed opportunities per unit, which manual rounds rarely achieve. The compliance rate (the average opportunity score, with 100% for both washes, 50% for one, and 0% for neither) is broken down overall and by campus or department.
Who uses it. Infection control and infection prevention officers for trend analysis and audit preparation. Nurse managers and charge nurses for department and team performance.
Entity types and filters. Compliance Report covers Staff or Locations.
- Staff: filter by staff department and role.
- Locations: select campuses first, then optionally drill into departments. Filter by location and dispenser department.
Time range. Uses a time range. See Report time range options.
Dispenser Activations
What it provides. A count of dispense events across the dispensers or locations you select, over a time range. The report opens with the Total number of Dispenser Activations, followed by a table that breaks the count down by campus, or by department when the report covers departments. An activation is a single dispense event (a badge recorded at a dispenser).
Under the total, Within an opportunity shows how many of those activations happened during a hand hygiene opportunity for the badge recorded at the dispenser, followed by that count as a percentage. The percentage is out of the activations Hand Hygiene was able to evaluate, not the total. When none of the activations in the time range could be evaluated, the line does not appear.
When the report covers specific dispensers, the table lists one row per dispenser instead, under location headings (campus / building / floor). Each row shows the dispenser's Name, Department, and Dispenser Activations. A selected dispenser with no data in the time range shows No activation data for this dispenser.
Activations count every dispense event, so this total is not the same as the number of compliant hand washes on the Compliance Report — a dispense only becomes a counted wash when it falls inside a patient room visit's wash-in or wash-out window. Read Dispenser Activations as a measure of dispenser usage, not of compliance.
Why it matters. It shows how much each dispenser is actually used. A dispenser with very few activations may be badly placed or faulty; one with very high use may need another dispenser nearby to share the load. Both inform where dispensers should go, and how often they need restocking.
Who uses it. Facility managers, environmental services, and biomed teams.
Entity types and filters. Dispenser Activations covers Dispensers or Locations.
- Filter by dispenser type, location, and dispenser department. (Dispenser types are the ones defined for your account under Settings.)
Time range. Uses a time range. See Report time range options. A typical recurring profile is a daily activations report for a unit, generated each morning.
Low Soap Dispensers
What it provides. The dispensers whose status is currently Low Refill, meaning their refill level is below the Low Refill Threshold. The report opens with the Total number of Low Soap Dispensers, then lists the dispensers grouped by campus and building, each with its Dispenser ID, location (floor and room), department, and current soap level. The result is a point-in-time replenishment worklist.
Why it matters. Stocked dispensers keep hand hygiene possible; an empty dispenser is a compliance and safety gap. The soap level is calculated from the configured soap capacity and the dispense count since the last refill, not read from a sensor in the dispenser. The threshold is the Low Refill Threshold in Settings; the default is 25%.
Who uses it. Facility managers and environmental services restocking crews.
Entity types and filters. Low Soap Dispensers covers Locations only. Select campuses, then optionally departments.
Time range. None. The report reflects dispenser state at the moment you generate it, which suits an on-demand restock worklist. See Report time range options.
Note: The Low Soap Dispensers report lists the dispensers with the Low Refill status. It is separate from the Refill level alert, which uses its own refill level. See Set the Low Refill Threshold and Dispenser details.
